The spirit of the Alps: The High Mountain Nature Conservation Park Zillertal Alps

Summer in Zillertal is a picturesque play of colours: The radiant blue of the sky, the vibrant green of the forest, the sheer grey of the rocks and the eternal white of the glaciers. In the midst of it all lies the charming alpine village of Mayrhofen, with nature right on the doorstep: The High Mountain Nature Conservation Park Zillertal Alps. A huge nature reserve, lovingly maintained and preserved by many partners in the region. The Alpine Hideaway ZILLERTALERHOF is one of its facilitators.

Whether you are hiking, mountain biking or riding a race bike: Every day there’s something new to discover in and around Mayrhofen. For example: Outdoor adventures in Stilluptal Valley (17 km) – perfect for a breathtaking mountain bike tour to the historic Stillup Reservoir (since 1966) at 1116 metres above sea level. Or maybe something a little more challenging: in the traditional region of Tuxertal Valley, you can admire the huge glaciers of the Frozen Wall (3288 m) at the Olperer (3476 m). High alpine action junkies will also get their fill at Zemmgrund, where the stony Berlin Hut at the far end of the valley has defied the capricious alpine weather since 1879 – at 2042 metres above sea level.

Hiking tips in the Zillertal

532 kilometres of well-developed hiking trails, thousands of metres of altitude – a true alpine experience. Zillertal mountaineering legend Peter Habeler couldn’t agree more: For him, the Zillertal peaks are the most beautiful in the world. Climbing them is a wonderful experience, sometimes even eased by a nearby cable car service. Examples? The demanding climb to the Hoarbergkarspitze (2278 m) can be done all year round from Mayrhofen, even by cable car if need be, while the four eternally snow-capped three-thousand-metre peaks in the south (Hochfeiler – 3509 m, Großer Möseler – 3480 m, Schwarzenstein – 3369 m and Großer Löffler – 3378 m) are only accessible on foot. It’s best to tackle the attempt with the support of a professional mountain guide – at the ZILLERTALERHOF we are always happy to help you organise one.

You can learn a lot about life in the Alps on the “Bergmähderweg” hike. Through the Zillergrund gorge and blooming alpine meadows to the Kolmhaus (tip:  try a fresh buttermilk on the sun deck) – if you happen to be visiting in midsummer, you can witness the ancient tradition of “Bergmahd” first-hand (mowing with a scythe).

A highlight for travelling architects and lovers of straight lines and shapes: On a rock overhang to the east of the reservoir at Penkenjoch, Swiss star architect Mario Botta designed an iconic granite chapel at an altitude of 2087 metres (inspired by the form of a polished gem) – a true jewel of the Alps.

Tradition, music and culture in Zillertal

Zillertal has lots to offer in terms of cultural wealth. Customs, traditions, folk festivals and events – the people of Zillertal maintain their cultural heritage with fond devotion. And in fact, there’s always something to celebrate: The cattle drives up and down the mountains, May Day celebrations, the Sacred Heart bonfires, the Nordkette Wetterleuchten music festival, the traditional Gauder Fest, spring processions and the Easter bonfire – guests in the Zillertal are welcome everywhere.

The summer also brings special highlights to the stage: The yearly theatre festivals Stummer Schrei and Steudltenn present traditional and modern folk art in a densely packed programme. The Zillertal also leaves a lasting musical impression on its guests:  For example, the Blechlawine music festival – when Mayrhofen resonates with the sound of brass music for a whole weekend. Still not enough for you? Then head to the Schürzenjäger Open-Air – a rambunctious folk music festival, featuring the famous local folk music heroes Zillertaler Schürzenjäger and many others. In short: There’s always something going on in the Zillertal. You are welcome to check out the latest event programme at the ZILLERTALERHOF – including some hidden gems.
